A Simple Guide to Coffee Roasts

Its been over 16 years since i left the Royal Marines and yes i still speak the lingo (i don't think that will ever stop) and i can still remember most of the glorious ackroyms that we used however the one that has had the most impact on my life is KISS also known as Keep It Simple Stupid!

In this blog we are going to explore the different type of coffee roasts, so lets keep it simple and look at the main 3 roast types that we offer.

TheThree main roast types

Light Roast

  • Light brown colour and dry surface

  • Roasted for the shortest amount of time

  • Tend to be have more fruity, floral or citrus flavour notes

  • Beans are generally more dense and harder

  • Slightly more caffeine than darker roasts due to less time being roasted

  • Better to be had without milk as it can drown out the flavours

Medium Roast

  • Medium brown colour and a slight sheen of oil on the surface

  • Well rounded flavour profile, flavour notes of caramel, chocolate and nuts.

  • Slighty less dense than light roast, very versatile for various brewing methods

  • Generally a moderate caffeine content

  • Most popular choice amongest coffee drinkers, medium roasts offer a balanced cup with a mix of bright and rich flavours

Dark Roast

  • Roasted for the longest duration, resulting in dark brown to almost black beans with a shiny oily surface.

  • Bold, rich flavour with lower acidity. Often smokey, chocolatey or even bitter notes

  • Beans are less dense and more brittle, this can affect grind size and extraction during brewing process.

  • Less caffeine compared to other roasts due to longer roasting times

  • Perfect for those who like a robust, full bodied coffee with deep intense flavours. Ideal for espresso
